<Description: Keywords : Medicinal Plants. Chemotaxonomy. Biotaoxonomy.Endemism. Re-evaluation and industrial exploitation of phytodiversity.
The aim of the project is the re-evaluation of underestimated crops such as medicinal plants belonging to traditional culture /folk remedies in the Mediterranean area, and to establish the chemo-biotaxonomic relationships existing among them. These plants have been used for ages by local healers as remedies against a wide variety of illnesses. Very few is known about the relationships existing between composition and activity of these plants and mechanism regulating their activity. Re-discovery of traditional practices belonging to the past centuries and their study through modern multidisciplinary approach is therefore compulsory. Chemical composition and biological activity can be used together , as independent data coming from different assays/analyses, as measure of phytoequivalence or phytodiversity . The "marker approach", successfully used so far for more restricted areas, is proposed also to determine the influence of local climatic conditions.
