<Project Title: Oseltamivir resistance>
<Financial Scheme: Progetti in collaborazione - Small or Medium>
<Description: HEALTH-2009-2.3.1 - Antimicrobial drug resistance
HEALTH 2009-2.3.3 - Emerging epidemics

During the last influenza seasons, oseltamivir resistance is growing up at the global level. Lately, resistant strains have been also detected in Southern Hemisphere. On the basis of the influenza strains collected for influenza surveillance in each country, oseltamivir resistant strains will be detected by an enzymatic assay with a fluorescent substrate MUNANA and pirosequencing. Influenza surveillance is very well established in the participating countries, so an important number of viruses could be included. The appearance of this resistance could not be associated with the clinical use of the drug but with spontaneous genome mutations at the neuraminidase level. The geographical distribution and viral spread of these strains will be studied and related with evolutionary data. >
