HEALTH-2009-4.3.1-3: Human Immune Responses to co-infections of Poverty-Related (HIV, malaria, TB) and Neglected Infectious Diseases.

Human immune responses to various infections are being thoroughly investigated from prophylactic and therapeutic aspects. However, it remains unclear how and why certain infections caused by virus, unicellular eukaryotic parasites, bacteria or worm enhance the probability for co-infections with other diseases, a phenomenon that causes a severe medical and economical burden in Developing Countries.
The company has initiated an FP7 project that will study the role of the innate immune system in triggering an efficient immune response in co-infected individuals with special emphasis on children. Attempts will be made to identify immune surrogates that will provide protection against co-infections and which will serve as the basis for the development of potent prophylactic vaccines.

Goal
The ultimate goal of the project is to develop a thorough understanding of human immune response to co-infections of poverty-related and neglected infectious diseases aiming at the optimization of prevention, treatment and vaccination of these diseases.
We propose to
- Study the role and function of the human innate immune system in co-infection and the pathogenesis of the involved diseases
- Identify immune surrogates for protection and triggering an efficient immune response in co-infected individuals
- Develop potent prophylactic vaccines
