<Description: Priorities' Main Research Areas:
An increasing list of neurological disorders is caused by altered synaptic functioning linked to mutations in synaptic proteins. A novel class of neurodevelopmental molecules is emerging based on the growing body of evidence showing that some molecules traditionally known in the immune system have distinct nonimmune functions in the brain, in particular in synaptogenesis and plasticity. These findings point to new directions for research in the field of synaptopathies. In human, mutations observed in some of such "immune" molecules are linked to defective immune functions as expected, but also in the alteration of some brain functions. For instance, mutations described in molecules of the CD3 signaling pathway are responsible for not only immune-related defects, but also for severe mental retardation or schizophrenic symptoms. Our team is devoted to the study of such molecules that we have recently shown to be localized at excitatory synaptic sites in rodent and human brain. These molecules belong to the family of membrane receptors and signaling adaptor proteins.

Project description:
Using biochemical, molecular and cellular approaches on rodent models together with imaging techniques, we aim to delineate some novel mechanisms involved in synapse formation and function and help to define new targets for neurological disorders therapies.
