Project Concept and Scope
The scope of the project is the research and development of modern concepts and tools for the management of intangible assets in the aerospace industry, with a view at increasing the overall efficiency of development, production and operation of aeronautic material. The concept and tools shall be validated at regional level, through participation of aviation manufacturing partners, and the end deliverables of the project shall be available for application at a wider European level.

Abstract
European aviation community has done well in the century old competition against Americans for supremacy in the high-tech aerospace sector, and is in a good position to take the next step into the new entreprise management models with pioneer countries Denmark and Austria having already legally formalised the reporting of intangible assets aggregated with tangible asset classes. Intangible assets like brand, pattents, structured knowledge and business processes, skills and experience, innovation and partnerships are important contributors to the present and future health of companies, in particular in the high-technology sector.
The management of intangible assets supports the rationalisation of resources (cost) used in economic processes, and on the other hand is a strong contributor to business sustainability and future value. High technology, knowledge intensive and innovative industries like aerospace are situated at the high end of the scale of impact of intangibles over the market value and performance of companies. Recent studies and whitepapers released by world's leading business management institutes (see Reference List), showed that half or more of the market value of high-tech companies is based on future/intangible value created by organizational, relational or human performance assets, whereas most business leaders could hardly address such issues due to general lack of industrywide acceptable standards.
For instance, the knowledge to trade innovation results or resell aviation R&D products to general industry may be an important profit driver for the manufacturing companies. The popular anti-blocking breaking system (ABS) used nowadays throughout the automotive industry is an aviation patent and was first used with aircraft to reduce the breaking distance. By a different example, manpower has been traditionally considered simplistically a cost item and still is reported as such in actual management reporting systems, however modern economic models alternately consider manpower an asset instead. The knowledge to exploit and develop that asset's (in)formal competence and skills is a key productivity driver in the manpower and knowledge intensive industry of aerospace.
The measurement and alignment of organizational, relational and human assets' contribution to the strategic and operational objectives of aviation companies, and the subsequent impact over the general cost-efficiency in the aircraft development and production are core interests of this project, continuing past research and case studies completed by the Cranfield University Management Research Institute and partners in economic areas like IT&C, oil&gas, retail and others.
The project consortium shall use a proven collaborative web platform as a principal working tool of the project partners, and a virtual testing ground of concepts and methods, that shall also represent the material support of the end product of the research programme.
The project shall contribute to the objectives of the FP7 research category AAT-2008.4.1-RTD-1 "Improving Cost Efficiency" in two ways: on one hand visible effects of structured intangible asset management (i.e. reduction of lost time with redundant formalities in production processes) have a direct impact on manpower productivity and unit cost. On the other hand, the project is expected to disclose cost and revenue elements in aviation manufacturing that are not currently reported in the traditional financial management, and therefore it is believed that cost efficiency should be considered in a broader context including intangible cost elements like a manufacturer's capacity to standardize production processes and maximize on cost effects of repeatability and flow of production sequences.
