<Financial Scheme: Ricerca per il beneficio di gruppi specifici (SME)>
<Description: The major problem in Mediterrenean Aquaculture is the inshore location of the existing fishfarms. Although there are some off shore and mostly semi- offshore examples, the scope of this is very limited with few countries and especially with relatively bigger fish farms. Moreover, when urbanization, tourism, navigation, marine protected areas, harbours and maritime traffic are taken into consideration, access to coastal space results in severe user conflicts.
Nowadays among fish farmers following the new regulation changes, there is a tendency towards moving from costal conditions to more exposed sites. At this point, farmers especially small fish farmers is confronting with the main problem of lack of guidelines, documentation and standards in Mediterranean Bassin. This reality is both regional, national and intermediterrenean basis. Although some regulations exist at the national and regional levels, standardization with documentation covering all manufacturing steps in the industry does not exist. In particular the suitability of current equipment for Mediterranean conditions is doubtful.
The main aim of the project is create a base of knowledge, educated personnel, and technology suitable for and adapted to the Mediterranean Bassin's conditions, species and realities to meet producer, consumer and governmental demands and needs. Improved quality and development of technological solutions will not only increase the competitiveness of the participating SME's but also this will have considerable impact over the competitiveness of the Mediterrenean Aquaculture Industry in world market.
