<Reference n.: PMI7-EU-BSGSME-40>
<Deadline: 11/04/2008>
<Programme: Ricerca per le PMI>

<Project Title: NICER Health Care: New Innovative Concepts and Equipment in Rehab and Health Care >
<Financial Scheme: Ricerca per il beneficio di gruppi specifici (SME)>
<Description: Synopsis
Equipment used - and concepts applied - in care and rehabilitation of citizens, who are physically or mentally disabled by accident, illness or age, are generally not taking advantage of progress reached and research completed in institutes and university hospitals and in neighbouring fields, such as training of athletes. For the patients, this is resulting in slower and inadequate recovery from injuries as well as faster than needed physical deterioration of the elderly and sick people. In addition to this, many handicapped people feel "manipulated" and somewhat humiliated rather than assisted, when old fashioned and clumsy equipment is used, which exposes their physical shortcomings during daily activities such as eating, toilet visits and personal hygiene.
The NICER Health Care project aims at improving the above situation by developing a suite of health care equipment with a number of new features, which are backed up by training programmes, developed and tested by ergo therapists and medical doctors based on actual experience and field research as well as theoretical research. Among these features, one could mention:
-The training and rehabilitation equipment has a user interface comprising a graphic screen and a set of function keys and other data input device to allow fast storage and updating of specific data for individual users. Such data must include personal ID and historic data on health conditions as well as a prescribed training programme and a record of previous performances on key exercises.
-Personal data must be stored on a personal (USB) key or similar medium to allow fast and secure transfer to and from the equipment. The equipment will recognize and separate relevant data for use by each session (training pass or other use)
-As a starting point for the training, data from the personal key will automatically set the equipment according to the users "geometry", physical ability and previous training record.
-The mechanical part of the equipment must be designed in a way that it benefits from the latest results and knowledge in the field of ergonomics and rehabilitation. In no way, the equipment will duplicate stationary bicycles and other equipment belonging to the commercial fitness area
-Design of the equipment must be of very high standard from a functional, aesthetic as well as from a safety and maintenance point of view.
By designing and realizing such equipment, the project will benefit not only the handicapped or elderly user but also physicians, nurses and social and health care workers, whose health condition is jeopardized by the heavy loads and awkward work positions.
<Organisation Type: Impresa>

<Partner Sought: The consortium is looking for the following additional partners in the project:
-Two or more industrial SMEs active in the health care area
-A research partner with a deep knowledge of the latest concepts and methods used in rehabilitation and health care
