The objective is to identify, characterize and evaluate the
effectiveness of novel anti-infective compounds isolated from natural
sources (microorganisms, plants or animals) for future development of
an alternative means to antibiotics to prevent and control human
infections by Gram-positive (mainly within the genus Streptococcus)
and Gram-negative pathogenic bacteria, and to reduce the increasing
antibiotic resistance amongst these human pathogens by reducing the
use of antibiotics in human medicine. Emphasis will be placed on the
identification, and biochemical and molecular characterization of
active antimicrobial compounds, as well as on the elucidation of their
antimicrobial effect and mode of action on bacterial pathogens with
acquired antibiotic resistance.>
