<Reference n.: PMI7-EU-BSGSME-28>
<Deadline: 11/04/2008>
<Programme: CAPACITIES>
<Project Title: EMAHIA>
<Financial Scheme: >
<Description: Key words:
Biodiversity, organic pesticides, organic cosmetology, organic
fouling, seaweed extracts
Organisation activities:
LEBHAM-IUEM-UBO: two main topics are followed within the lab : (1)
knowledge of population of marine plants (population biology,
taxonomy) and (2) isolation of bioactive compounds
Expertise offered:
Extraction of marine plants (halophytes and algae)
Biological testing of extracts: marine and terrestrial strains
Cultivation of rare marine plants
Cultivation of interesting plants in term of biomolecules
Isolation of high added-value natural products derived from European
marine algae and halophytes
<Organisation Type: Universitą>
<Partner Sought: Project abstract:

The large biodiversity of marine algae and halophytes in Europe is not
well known and not sufficiently exploited. Still it can represent a
valuable source of biologically active compounds for a wide array of
industries. The present proposal is aimed at valorising some of these
organisms while replying to a growing industrial demand of novel
natural sources from the sea. Different steps are proposed to fulfil
these objectives, such as the extraction and partial characterization
of some plant products, the biological testing of these products (raw
and semi-fractionated extracts), the wide-scale testing for efficiency
and the formulation of the marketable products. The extracts or
molecules under investigation are expected to play a role in the
antimicrobial defence mechanisms of marine plants. Those properties
suggest potent applications in several domains including agriculture,
as well as naval and cosmetic industries. Following the need of new
natural products for the SMEs of those fields, research teams and SMEs
from different European countries will join their effort to conduct
the proposed collaborative work.
The project will be carried out during two years of a common work
involving SMEs which are not in competition with one another. It
should lead to the isolation of high added-value natural products
derived from European marine algae and halophytes.
(French and Portuguese SMEs are already implicated in the project).
Expertise sought:
SME producing or willing to produce organic fertilizers or organic
pesticides from active seaweed and halophytes extracts.>
