Description of expertise:
The Centre of Social Studies of the University of Beira Interior
(UBI_CES) was founded in 1994 as a structure of pure and applied
research.
Under its present name UBI_CES, the Centre maintains a tight
relationship with the Department of Sociology, and Social Sciences
have been its main area of research. However, it also welcomes
researchers belonging to other scientific fields, from the University
of Beira Interior and beyond, and it encourages interdisciplinary
research.
In recent years, the UBI_CES has gained more vitality, as is evident
in the events in which it has been involved and in the projects in
which it has participated, either as a partner or as the responsible
unit. This enhanced activity was attendant on the involvement of a
number of young staff members/assistants connected to the various

Main Objectives of the UBI_CES:
The principal aim of UBI_CES is the pursuit of research in the field
of Sociology and other Social Sciences. This investigation (pure,
applied and investigation-action) and the activities of UBI_CES are
divided between two thematic groups and lines of investigation:
Development and Polices (Territorial Development, Public Policies and
Citizenship and Reflexivity, Science and Technology) and Cultures and
Diversity (Culture, Art and Literature and Gender and Ways of Life).
