<Project Title: 'Standardisation of processes of digitisation of
museum collections within the framework of the European Digital
Library'>
<Financial Scheme: >
<Description: Since the origination of the idea of the European
Digital Library, the aim of which is to facilitate access to various
cultural and scientific resources of European cultural heritage
(books, films, maps, works of art etc.) at work, for the development
of personal interests or the expansion of knowledge, cultural
institutions have been increasingly willing to digitalise and publish
their collections on the Internet. Popularisation is not the only aim
of these activities. Once digitalised, cultural and scientific
heritage can be used for the creation of a wide spectrum of services,
e.g. play a crucial role in the development of sectors such as
education or tourism.
However, the pre-requisite for effective access to digital information
is the need to standardise digitalisation processes in Europe, in
particular to standardise the method of digitalisation and description
of cultural resources available on the Internet.
The need to undertake actions to facilitate access to digitalised
cultural goods has been brought up at a large number of meetings. One
of them was the meeting of experts in Lund (Sweden) in April 2001,
during which 2 documents concerning the implementation of agreed rules
were adopted:

In 2005 another document was adopted as a continuation of the action
plan accepted in Lund:  Dynamic Action Plan for the EU coordination of
digitisation of cultural and scientific content
http://www.minervaeurope.org/publications/dap.htm

At the same time, many countries and organisations make attempts to
standardise digitalisation operations, with a view to supporting
universal access to cultural goods by initiating works on metadata,
registers and schemes. These include e.g. the Digitalisation Committee
functioning in the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage or the
commission working in the National Archives in the Kingdom of the
Netherlands, which has already finished work on a guide for Dutch
archives where various methods of digitalization are discussed, with
best solutions being proposed at the same time.
Similar standards were also elaborated in Norway.
Standardisation attempts are also made by international organisations.
From the viewpoint of the National Museum in Kraków, recommendations
of ICOM-CIDOC (International Committee for Documentation of the
International Council of Museums) CRM (Conceptual Reference Model)
based on ISO 21127:2006 concerning issues such as computer database,
are particularly important.

Tasks of the Project (primary):
a)        Carrying-out of queries and gathering of knowledge about methods of
digitalisation of cultural resources that are already used and
preferred in Europe.
b)        Benchmarking of various methods of digitalisation of cultural
heritage.
c)        Development of the system of model solutions on the basis of best
practices.
d)        Distribution and popularisation of elaborated solutions.

<Organisation Type: Altro>
<Partner Sought: Partners of the Project:
Renowned European Institutions from the cultural sector, with
particular stress on Central and Eastern European countries (new
member states). Partners of the project include museums, associations
and organisations focusing cultural institutions (in particular
museums) and having experience in the digitisation of cultural and
scientific resources as well as IT companies and standardisation
institutions. We would like to include also institutions that have
experience in developing collaborative frameworks at micro-levels but
especially across institutions responsible for policy reform.
